Year R

Summer Term 1

Last half-term, the children loved the topics we learnt about. We started by learning the days of the week, and discovered that the very hungry caterpillar ate something different on each day of the week. We discussed how to keep our bodies healthy and which foods give us the most nutrients.  The children were so eager when making their own fruit salads and sing the wiggles song 'Fruit Salad'. Furthermore, each class had 4 caterpillar each to look after and watch as they changed into a butterfly. Luckily, they were ready to fly off just before we broke up for half-term.

The Mini beasts topic was also a great success with the children. They enjoyed going on a mini beast hunt and creating habitats for their creatures. We made fact files about each mini beast and played 'guess the mini beast'.

We finished the half-term by receiving a very angry letter from the giant. We later discovered it was from the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk. The children loved measuring beanstalks, planting their own and re-telling the story.

In maths, we have introduced the children to 'First, Then, Now' to help them write and form number sentences. We also learn the tricky word 'Double' and what this means.

Spring Term W/C 29th March

Happy Easter!

Reception had a lovely week celebrating Easter! We discovered that Easter falls in Spring. Therefore, we went on a Spring walk to look for clues suggesting we are now in a new season. The children were very excited because we went down to the Junior school playing field. We found a lot of signs of Spring such as: daffodils, buttercups, the sunshine, leaves on trees, bees and wasps. The children created some lovely observational drawings and paintings of the daffodils they found and had a go at segmenting and blending the word spring. We even had a go at writing it! Both classes then discovered a letter from Chucky the Chicken and the Easter Bunny. They set Ruby and Diamond's the challenge of looking after their new baby chicks. However, they didn't make it easy for us... We had to follow the egg clues around the school in order to find the chicks. Reception worked very hard as a team to ensure they completed their chick hunt. Finally, we ended the term with a fantastic Easter bonnet parade. The children marched around the school showing off their Easter bonnets to the older years and staff. Reception staff, KS1 staff and children were very impressed with the creativity of Reception's Easter bonnets!

We took our maths even further this week by exploring the topic 'People Who Help Us'. The children loved discussing what they knew about each job role and what to do if we need to contact someone to help us. They created 'Call 999' posters and worked really hard on correctly writing the number 9.

Thank you for all your support this term, we hope you have a lovely Easter break!

Spring Term W/C 22nd March

Dino Week Continued...

The children were so enthusiastic during Dino week we decided to take it further. We continued looking after our pet dinosaurs and ensuring they had everything to keep them safe and well. We looked at non-fiction books and wrote a fact file about Dinosaurs. Also, each plant/flower group participated in a guided write, where they collectively shared their ideas. We have some very imaginative children in Ruby and Diamond classes! One story ended with a Dinosaur and 'Chick'in'lickin' having a birthday party in the forest! Ruby and Diamond's have also been working really hard on making and representing the numbers 9 and 10. During Forest School, Ruby Class found dinosaur fossils and unicorn hair! We decided to make our own fossils and dino masks. Both Ruby and Diamond's loved showing off their new look!

Well done Super Dinos! There has been some fantastic learning this week!

Dino Week!

The children received a very important letter from Mumma Dino on Monday. She asked if the children could look after her eggs until they hatch. Each child was also responsible for looking after their own dinosaur for the week by bathing, feeding and making a home for it. They came up with a name for their dinosaur and wrote a list of instructions of how to take care of it.

In maths we have been adding 2 groups together and writing number sentences. The children worked very hard ensuring thy used the correct amount of dinosaurs and the matching numricon.

In PE, the children had a great session focusing on hockey. The PE coach was very impressed with how well the children worked as a team.

Well done Ruby and Diamond's for another fantastic week! Lets see what next week brings...

Spring Term W/C 8th March

Welcome back Reception!

The children have settled back into school so well! We have had a great week full of exciting topics and adventures.

On Monday, the children enjoyed their first session with the PE coach. On Tuesday, Ruby Class absolutely loved their first Forest School session, including finding hidden doors and dinosaur fossils.

Both Ruby and Diamond Classes have tried to be 'Bucket Fillers' this week, as opposed to 'Bucket Dippers' - based on the story 'Have you filled a bucket today?' by Carol McCloud. The children thought of some lovely ideas of how to be a bucket filler.

On Friday we had a great day becoming scientists for Science Day. There were lots of pops, fizzles and bangs! Experiments included making: elephants toothpaste, a balloon rocket, moon sand, a volcano, lava artwork, dancing raisins and rainbow walking water.

Well done for a fantastic first week back Reception!
