Welcome to Reception at Crawley Ridge
Reception is an exciting time as children begin their journey at Crawley Ridge. Our Early Years curriculum provides strong foundations for learning while giving children the opportunity to play, explore, talk, create and develop their independence.
We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework, covering the seven areas of learning and development. We carefully build on each child's starting points, interests and experiences, helping them to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for the next stage of their education.
Learning through play and teaching
Play is an important part of learning in Reception. Children have opportunities to learn both independently and alongside adults, using our wonderful indoor and outdoor environments to explore, practise and apply what they have been taught. Adults interact with children through questioning, modelling and conversation, helping them to deepen their thinking and extend their learning.
Alongside learning through play, children experience whole-class teaching, small-group work and focused activities across the curriculum.
Reading, writing and maths
We place a strong emphasis on developing children's communication, vocabulary, early reading, writing and mathematical understanding.
Children follow the ELS (Essential Letters and Sounds) phonics programme, building their knowledge of sounds and developing the skills they need to become confident early readers. High-quality books, stories, rhymes and conversation are an important part of everyday life in Reception.
Mathematical understanding is developed through purposeful teaching, practical experiences and opportunities to use maths within play and everyday situations.
Growing in confidence
Alongside academic learning, we give children time and support to develop their confidence, independence, relationships and emotional wellbeing. We want children to become curious, resilient learners who are willing to have a go, ask questions and learn from their experiences.
Our indoor and outdoor learning, Forest School experiences, visits and visitors give children opportunities to explore the world around them and develop their understanding beyond the classroom.
Working together with families
We value the partnership between home and school. We share information about children's learning and development throughout the year and encourage parents and carers to share their child's interests, achievements and experiences with us.
Our aim is for every child to leave Reception feeling confident, curious and ready for the next stage of their learning journey.
