At the end of Year 1 most children should

  • be able to use maps, atlases and globes at different scales to identify some significant places (e.g. the UK, the Polar regions, the Equator and some other easily recognisable land masses such as Africa and Australia)
  • name the four coutries which make up the UK, its capital cities and its surrounding seas
  • identify seasonal and aily weather patterns in the UK
  • identify and describe key human and physical geographical features, using appropriate geographical language (e.g. hill, valley, beach, cliff, coast, forest, city, town, village, factory, farm, harbour; a bridge over a river, traffic in a busy town)
  • use simple locational and directional langauge (left, right, near, far, above, below, North, South, East, West)
  • be able to follow a route represented on a simple (linear) map
  • be able to create a simple map of a real or imaginary place (eg a story map)
  • begin to develop their awareness of the local area immediately round the school
  • explore the outdoor environment at school, studying the landscape, flora and fauna
  • begin to explore what it might be like to live in different places
  • use a variety of sources to find out about places (through stories, first hand experiences, fieldwork, photos, books, the internet, maps)
  • communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, collecting and presenting data and writing
