Year 2 Content

Physical Education

The content of the curriculum will enable the following outcomes.

Dance

Acquiring and Developing skills

At the end of the year most children should

  • perform basic dance actions with some understanding of mood and feeling, e.g travelling in a hurry, jumping for joy
  • change and vary the weight of actions- can move lightly, can move with strength
  • copy, remember and repeat simple dance phrases

Selecting and Applying skills

At the end of the year most children should

  • perform a whole dance which has a simple structure
  • explore a range of movements suitable to the idea
  • perform with appropriate dynamics to interpret the idea
  • work with a partner showing compositional skills such as copying movements, follow side by side, back to back and moving at the same time or one after the other

Games

Acquiring and developing skills

At the end of the year most children should

  • play games with some fluency and accuracy, using a range of throwing and catching techniques
  • maintain a continuous game
  • participate in team games

Selecting and applying skills

At the end of the year most children should

  • find ways of attacking successfully when using other skills
  • use a variety of simple tactics for attacking well, keeping possession of the ball as a team and getting into positions to score
  • know the rules of a few games
  • develop simple tactics for attacking and defending 

Gymnastics

Acquiring and Developing Skills

At the end of the year most children should

  • show various ways of travelling and balancing with different parts of the body being the highest point or the closest to the ground
  • show different pathways on the floor and travel along them in different directions
  • travel at different speeds and levels
  • use jumps and turns to link movements
  • link one movement with another smoothly and continuously and at different speeds and levels

Selecting & Applying Skills

At the end of the year most children should

  • show various ways of travelling and balancing with the body close to or far from the ground or apparatus
  • take weight confidently on hands to lift the feet high
  • plan and link together 2 or 3 movements showing control and coordination and an awareness of change in speed
  • work with a partner to build a balanced bridge
  • use appropriate movements to travel along different shaped pathways
  • link together 3 different ways of travelling to create an interesting pathway
  • build a sequence with a beginning, middle and end
  • observe and copy a partner in ‘follow my leader’ formation to show different pathways and link appropriate movements
  • turn, spin and twist on different body parts, showing control and coordination
  • understand that one part of the body must be ‘fixed’ to create a twist
  • link together 3 movements showing contrasts in speed and level
  • perform movements where different parts of the body lead into the next action
  • apply and transfer skills and linked movements from the floor onto apparatus

Knowledge & Understanding of Health & Fitness

At the end of the year most children should

  • suggest warm up activities
  • explain how strength and suppleness affect the way you perform
  • describe how their body works during physical activities
  • understand why it is important to be active
  • understand the need to warm up and cool down before and after exercise

Evaluating and Improving Performance

At the end of the year most children should

  • suggest improvements
  • use appropriate vocabulary
  • comment constructively on their own performance and that of others
  • compare and contrast their own and others’ performance
  • express likes and dislikes and give reasons
  • comment on similarities and difference
